ELECTRIC ENERGY IN
ARENDAL.
In 1997 the consumption of electric power in
Arendal was 855 GWh, or approximately 21.800 kWh pr. inhabitant.
This concerns both industry and trade, in addition to private and
public consumption.
This deviates little from the rest of the
country. The consumption pr. inhabitant is somewhat higher in
Arendal than in Aust-Agder county, but somewhat lower than the
average of the country as a whole.
However, compared to the rest of the world, our
consumption of electric power is very high, almost 15 times higher
than the world average.
Data: Energy consumption in Arendal
Most of the electric power is produced in water
systems in the Arendal region, most of which are outside the town
region. Therefore the environmental problems connected to energy in
the town of Arendal are mainly restricted to power lines through
touring grounds and residential areas.
There are three major power plants supplying
Arendal’s consumers with energy:
- Arendal Energiverk , which has power stations
in the water courses of Arendal and Uldal. In 1998 the power plant delivered 317 GWh to
consumers in Arendal.
- Aust-Agder Kraftverk , which has power stations
in the water courses of Arendal, both in the counties of Aust-Agder
and Telemark. In 1998 the annual production was 2064 GWh, out of
which 207 GWh was delivered to Arendal.
- Arendals Fossekompani , which has two power
stations in the water courses of Arendal. Average annual production
is 425 GWh. Most of it is used for industrial purposes in Arendal,
but exact numbers are not available.
