Street and road network
The city thoroughfares in the centre are comparatively narrow: they have two lanes and very rarely three lanes. The width of the carriageway of the main thoroughfares ranges from 7 to 18 m. the lack of equipped parking lots leads to the fact that the actual width of thoroughfares becomes even less because of wildcat parking, especially in the areas adjacent to trade centres and establishments. As a result, many central thoroughfares are overloaded. The transport interchanges on different levels do not exist, what reduces the traffic flow speed and increases the noise level.
The existing planning structure of the city makes it possible to use a number of streets for even distribution of transport load. But in fact the transportation network does not ensure necessary conditions for that. The lack of timely repair and reconstruction of roads, the incompleteness of new arterial road construction have led to the low-level technical state of the road network. Of the total length of 730,000 km, 570,000 km are covered with asphalt; 80,000 km have gravel carpet and 80,000 km have earth surface. In most cases asphalt pavement does not conform to the generally accepted standards. Even the main city thoroughfares are very narrow and are mainly used for two-lane traffic. With wildcat along the roads, the carriageway becomes even narrower. That reduces the traffic speed and increases the negative impact of motor transport on the ecological state of the city environment.
