Air quality

The level of atmospheric air pollution in the city is above the average in comparison with other Commonwealth of Independent States countries having the same population. The double fall of the industrial production volume since 1991, especially the processing sector, should have led to a substantial improvement of the situation. But the expected improvement did not ensue: the volume of the emissions of the heat-and-power engineering complex remained practically on the same level and the transport exhaust increased.

The meteorological conditions and orography have a considerable impact on the state of atmospheric air. The frequency of low speed of the wind (0-1m/sec.) in the city during the year was 42% and 56 % in the autumn-winter time. The location of the city on a piedmont plain and the pronounced mountain-to-valley atmospheric circulation favour the formation of powerful and deep ground inversions. In 60 % of cases these inversions are observed when the winds are directed southeast and south. On the average during the year 17% of ground inversions are accompanied by a weak wind, and in certain months air blanketing reached 27%.
