Noise

What is being done to solve the problems

There is no regular monitoring of the noise level in the streets, in industrial, residential, and public buildings. The ministry of Health does only regular spot checks.

The maximum allowable noise level established in Bishkek is 65 dBA. On average the noise level above the maximum allowable limit in the main thoroughfares of Bishkek was 8 dBA. Due to some city planning decisions a part of sound-proofing plantations belts had been destroyed and the noise level in residential houses (with windows closed) was recorded to be 6 dBA higher than the maximum allowable limit.

The analysis showed that the traffic noise impacts 25-40% of the population of Bishkek negatively, even when its level is not above the maximum allowable limit. In recent years, the noise level has not decreased; on the contrary, it is growing gradually. From 40 to 70% of the population of Bishkek live under the conditions of acoustic discomfort.

It is necessary to create buffer zones with 3-row plantations. The best protection from noise is noise-suppressing 15-meter wide shelter belts of coniferous species (thuya, juniper) and of deciduous species (lime, mulberry) as well as of creeping plants. Plane-trees, hornbeams, and other plants with rough leaves are fit for dust protection.
