Environmental management is a critical function of the  Durban Metropolitan Council because of the need to protect the social, natural and economic resources on which our future development and quality of life depends. It is also essential to use resources wisely to maximise opportunities for sustainable growth and development now and in the future.

The environmental management strategy has been developed within the context of Durban's  Local Agenda 21 programme. The goal of Durban's Local Agenda 21 programme is the development of an environmental management system that will ensure environmentally sustainable development. The programme is currently in Phase 3.
