Results of public opinion survey

43c.GIF (1789 bytes)In November 2000, officers and collaborators of the Research laboratory for nature protection arranged public awareness survey in Dushanbe city. Totally, 400 townspeople took part in the inquiry, with regards to age, education, and place of residence. Questionnaires consisted of 17 articles and 40 questions. Estimated accuracy is 70%.

Survey shows that 41% of people consider the state of the urban environment satisfactory, about 22% good. With all this going on, 22% of people consider the state of the urban environment as unsatisfactory (basically inhabitants of Oktabrsky and Zeleznodorojny districts) and about 15% of people confused to reply.

Among basic environmental problems, population mentioned the following urgent issues: pollution of drinking water (67%), morbidity (59%), waste and garbage on the streets (59%), food security (55%), tree cutting (51%), air pollution (50%).

People consider that during last 5 years, atmospheric air quality remains on the average level (34%) and partially deteriorated (28%); state of watercourses - rivers, lakes and channels - turned into worse (47%); state of greenery, parks and streets became better (57%); drinking water quality became worsen (42%).

Among basic anthropogenic factors, which adversely affect urban environment, most known are: transport (46%), industry and city economy (40%), and residential sector (29%).

Most people consider the state of architectural monuments and historical buildings as good (30%) and satisfactory (36%).

Knowledge of national environmental legislation is rather high (78%), while international treaties are unknown.

Population of Dushanbe considers that there is a lack of information about the state of urban environment (air, water, radiation, food security, response measures, risks for health). Only 25-35% people think that environmental information is enough.

Most population access to environmental information through TV and radio (frequently - 47%, sometimes - 41%); newspapers and magazines (frequently - 27%, sometimes - 51%); conversation with friends and relatives (frequently - 31%, sometimes - 48%). Rarely used sources of information are: special literature, lections, environmental reports, and NGOs.

Most population confides (27%) and partially confides (42%) the environmental information.

The quality of existing environmental information is considered as average (47%) and low (37%).

Most population wishes to see in environmental information: text (29%), maps (19%), graphs (18%), and photos.

Most population is interested in preparation of city environmental report (58%).
Most population supports the idea of development of city environmental programme (74%). Same number of people supports nature protection activities.

On the question about planned activities of townspeople to assist in environmental conservation most population indicated tidying up of streets (31%), planting of trees and flowers (23%), scavenging (20%), cleaning of channels and watercourses (13%).
