Botanical
gardens and zoo
In order to accumulate and develop knowledge
about biological diversity there were established two botanical gardens in Dushanbe.
First is the central botanical garden under
Academy of Science of Tajikistan. The garden is located in the northern part of Dushanbe,
at an altitude of 840 m above sea level. Area is 34 hectares. Date of establishment -
1933. Total number of arboreal and shrub species is 2190.
All the garden's greenery is divided into few
conditional zones - Old Mediterranean (10 hectares, 639 species), East Asian (7 hectares,
837 species), American (5,3 hectares, 488 species), Central European and Siberian (4
hectares, 226 species).

Simultaneously, the botanical garden conducts
the experiments on the introduction of more then 500 species of decorative plants in
Dushanbe.
There is the greenhouse with many species of
tropical flora. Specially constructed pools serve for rehabilitation of water flora.
The second is the experimental botanical garden
under Tajik State National University. The garden is located in the western part of
Dushanbe, at an altitude of 820 m above sea level. Area is 53 hectares. Date of
establishment - 1956. Total number of arboreal and shrub species is 380, including local
flora - 73 species.
Both botanical gardens
essentially suffer from civil unrest and economical crisis. The present condition,
hopefully, seems to be recovering.
Dushanbe's zoo is located in the center of city,
on the right bank of Luchob River. Previous number of animals in Dushanbe's zoo was 1059,
related to 254 species. Nowadays, mainly because of financial impoverishment Dushanbe's
zoo is in an unsatisfactory state.
For educational purposes, Tajik State National
University maintains a zoological museum. However, its condition is unsatisfactory as
well.
