URBANISATION
- Service is inadequate.
- Multiple families living on one stand.
- Unplanned informal settlements creating accessibility and refuse transport problems.
- Lack of ownership particularly in undeveloped areas.
- Waste generated by informal traders.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND AWARENESS
- Community is not involved.
- Uneducated youth.
- Lack of information / education on, e.g. How cities function, importance of the
environment, waste management solutions, such as, recycling, etc.
- Lack of use, abuse or misuse of waste receptacles.
- General lack of awareness of waste management issues.
- Industry is not involved.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS
- Pollution of water systems, open spaces and drainage systems.
- Diseases, such as skin diseases.
- Psychological effects of living in a dirty environment.
THROW AWAY SOCIETY
- Increased purchasing of disposable products.
