WASTE COLLECTION
  • Illegal dumping, especially of industrial waste.
  • Lack of services to clean up after large public gatherings e.g. weddings, funerals etc.
  • No street cleaning.
  • No separate collection for yard trimmings, builders rubble and commercial and industrial waste.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURES

  • Inadequate management.
  • Inadequate staff capacity.
  • Inadequate systems, e.g. two-way communication with the public.
  • Low priority of waste management in the organisation.

RESOURCES

  • Lack of adequate funding.
  • Payment for services.
  • Lack of capital infrastructure including trucks, containers, etc.
  • Absence of easily accessible landfills.
  • Maintenance of mechanical equipment.

URBANISATION

  • Service is inadequate.
  • Multiple families living on one stand.
  • Unplanned informal settlements creating accessibility and refuse transport problems.
  • Lack of ownership particularly in undeveloped areas.
  • Waste generated by informal traders.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND AWARENESS

  • Community is not involved.
  • Uneducated youth.
  • Lack of information / education on, e.g. How cities function, importance of the environment, waste management solutions, such as, recycling, etc.
  • Lack of use, abuse or misuse of waste receptacles.
  • General lack of awareness of waste management issues.
  • Industry is not involved.

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

  • Pollution of water systems, open spaces and drainage systems.
  • Diseases, such as skin diseases.
  • Psychological effects of living in a dirty environment.

THROW AWAY SOCIETY

  • Increased purchasing of disposable products.
