CHALLENGES

|
- The provision of water and sewage to areas with minimal reticulation.
- The upgrading of services to areas that do not have water-borne sewage and which rely on
chemical toilets, pit-latrines or the sanitation pails.
- The reduction of the backlog in maintenance required for areas that have adequate
infrastructure but which, due to lack of maintenance, are currently not functioning
effectively or efficiently.
- The installation of additional capacity in areas that are subject to densification
resulting from urbanisation and the changes in land use.
- The provision of infrastructure to areas of greenfield developments i.e. the
mining belt, and the northern and southern extremities of the metropolitan area.
- The maintenance of standards of service delivery in the formally established areas of
the GJMC which have historically enjoyed high standards.
- The improvement of stormwater management.
- The promotion of the natural management of stormwater.
- To ensure that informal settlements are provided with an adequate number of chemical
toilets which are kept maintained.
- The improvement of capacity in some of the main sewer lines due to residential
densification.
- The upgrading and refurbishment of the sanitation network.
