The City of Košice consists of 4 districts:

Basic characteristic

The City of Košice has been developed in the geographically and strategically most important point of the Košická kotlina Basin, in the Hornád River Valley. The beginning of settlement can be traced back to the Old Stone Age. The first written mention about the city is dated back to the year 1230. Today, Košice is the second largest city in the Slovak Republic. It is industrial, administrative and cultural centre with developed system of schools with a great number of remarkable historical and cultural monuments. The Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic and many scientific institutes have their seats here. The Botanic Garden and ZOO deserve attention.

Climatic conditions are affected by the continental nature of the climate. The climate of the region is warm, mildly humid. Average annual temperature ranges from 7.7 to 9.5°C, while a slight increase in average temperature can be observed during the last years, but at the same time, higher amount of precipitation has been observed, too. Average annual air humidity fluctuates around 75%. The average sum of sunshine is 1,718.0 hours. The north-south direction of winds prevails.
