Climatic characteristic of Košice

The Košice region, which is geographically incorporated into the Košická kotlina Basin, is located in the A6 climatic zone. It is characterized as a warm, mildly humid zone with cold winter. The climatic index of continentality by Gorczynsky is 30%. Average annual air temperature for the period 1901–2000 is 8.6°C. Extreme values of air temperature range from +37 to – 30°C. In average, 10 tropical days (tmax3 30°C), 55 summer days (tmax3 25°C), 116 frost days (tminL – 0.1°C) and 37 ice days (tmaxL – 0.1°C) occur during the year.

As to air humidity, the Košická kotlina Basin with an annual average of relative air humidity 75% belongs among the areas with the lowest value of this characteristic in the region. In average, 58 shiny days and 126 cloudy days occur during the year. The sunshine lasts in average 2,035 hours in a year. The average annual precipitation amount for the period from 1901 to 2000 is 625 mm. The average number of days with precipitation 3 0.1 mm is 129 in a year. The average annual number of days with snow is 31.

Wind regime is determined by the orographic position of the area. The northern and southern circulation in the direction of the Košická kotlina Basin orientation predominates in the area of Košice. Average annual wind speed achieves 4.4 m/s. The occurrence of climatic calm is 10.3%. The northern components of circulation achieve the highest speed. The months of March and April are the windiest ones and the months of August and September are the least windy ones.
