Energy

How does the SECTOR influence city environment

The city heating plant TEKO Košice and the heating plant of VSŽ iron works in Košice are the sources of thermal energy with combined production of electric power in Košice.

The central heat supply to houses and companies prevails in the city. The city heating plant TEKO is the air pollution source located directly in the city of Košice. Air pollutants are recorded mainly in the southern part of the city. The heating plant increases gradually the percentage of the use of natural gas and reduces coal combustion. When compared with 1990, it reduces significantly emissions of solid particulate matters, NOx and SO2. Local boiler houses in the city use mainly gas.

What is the SECTOR in the City like

TEKO has a dominant position on the territory of Košice in the field of heat supply to inhabitants and city utilities (80%).

What is being done to make the SECTOR more environment-friendly

It is necessary to focus in future on tasks:

  • to increase the share of natural gas combustion to the detriment of coal combustion,
  • to continue in the development of the system of central heat supply in Košice, to replace that part of TEKOc s production that will be closed soon (the combined production of heat and electric power on the basis of natural gas using co-generation modules, use of geothermal energy for heat production),
  • reduction of sulphur components in combusted fuel (100 % combustion of low-sulphur coal, desulphurization of coke-oven gas in the VSŽ iron works),
  • ecological reconstruction of boilers in the heating plant of VSŽ iron works.
