Energy

How does the SECTOR influence city environment

The city heating plant TEKO Košice and the heating plant of VSŽ iron works in Košice are the sources of thermal energy with combined production of electric power in Košice.

The central heat supply to houses and companies prevails in the city. The city heating plant TEKO is the air pollution source located directly in the city of Košice. Air pollutants are recorded mainly in the southern part of the city. The heating plant increases gradually the percentage of the use of natural gas and reduces coal combustion. When compared with 1990, it reduces significantly emissions of solid particulate matters, NOx and SO2. Local boiler houses in the city use mainly gas.

In the generation of electric power and heat TEKO produces a large quantity of ash that is stored at the sludge-drying bed in the city district Krásna nad Hornádom. However, it has no free capacity any more. Therefore TEKO considers for the second time already to increase the sludge-drying bedc s capacity by raising the dike height.

TEKO discharges wastewater to the Torysa river that does not flow through Košice. The discharged wastewater represents the thermal pollution of the Torysa river.

The heating plant of VSŽ iron works supplies heat to the VSŽ through its own system of central heat supply. Besides coal it uses as fuel also metallurgical gases from iron, steel and coke production as the fuel. It produces large amounts of air pollutants, mainly NOx, SO2 and solid particulate matters. In 1998, the power industry of VSŽ produced 19% of the total pollution outlet and 14% of solid particles outlet.

Waste produced during this activity is disposed at the Suchá halda dry waste pile. In order to protect groundwater, the waste pile is being improved so that it would comply with ecological requirements.
