Transport

What is the SECTOR in the city like

Road transport

The transport communication system of Košice is created by two circles and basic radial roads:

  • internal circle – ensures the internal service of the Central City Zone,
  • external circle – ensures the service of the city core and interconnection of radial roads.

Main radial roads:

  • the motorway I/68 from the direction of Prešov – in the direction of I/68 to Hungary,
  • I/50 the direction Michalovce – I/50 the direction to Bratislava

As the planned transport structures have not been built, the existing transport junctions and roads are overburdened, having a negative impact on the quality of public transport.

Trams, trolley buses and buses ensure the public transport in Košice. The slow-down of the public transport causes the reduction of its efficiency and it results in further restrictions of the public transport, higher fare and further decrease of its attractiveness when compared with individual car transport (ICT).

The present development of the public transport results in the decline of its quality what can be proved by the following table.

The transport in the central city zone (CCZ) is of a specific significance.

The system of one-way roads has gradually been implemented in the central city zone. It proved to be worth because the transport situation became more transparent. By designed new parking places on these streets the deficit of static transport in CCZ has partially been reduced. However, it is necessary to carry on with gradual modifications of the organisation of transport in these localities of CCZ where, in respect to the increase of entrepreneurial business activities, problems with the fluency of traffic had occured and communications are overfilled with cars parking along the roads because of the lack of parking lots. For this reason a certain area is kept in CCZ as the reserve for the construction of large-capacity multi-floor parking garages.

A lack of parking and garage places is also recorded in housing estates where the construction of parking lots is not in compliance with the car transport development in the city. Cars are being parked along the roads and thus devastate green vegetation.

Railway transport

In the north – south direction Košice contacts a railway line. The railway junction occupies the most valuable territory of the city because it is in a direct contact with the central city zone and the Hornád river. Because of lack of funds a comprehensive ecological study of the railway junction’s impact on the environment has not been developed yet. In the area of the railway station, in the close proximity to the Hornád River, there is a dump of superstructure gravel. A new controlled landfill of the said waste is under consideration. Thus its negative impact on the environment would be solved.

Air transport

The Košice airport is located in the south from the built-up area of Košice, at the Košice – Barca city district. In 1992, the reconstruction of the airportc s runway was carried out and the drainage system of the landing runway was built. Thus, the underwater protection from oil product contamination has improved. Currently, a new terminal building is under construction. After its completion the airport will be of international importance. In 1992, the new noise study was developed, which includes the maximum expected flight load on this airport. The study suggests noise protection measures and specifies monitoring points at the built-up area of the city where the excessive noise load from air traffic is expected. Currently, the air traffic is stagnating and its impact on the environment is minimum.
