Air quality

What are the impacts of this issue

The negative impact of air pollution is manifested mainly in local air pollution and concentration of ground-level ozone.

Local air pollution

In the area of Košice, it is monitored and evaluated on 5 automatic monitoring stations (AMS) of the Slovak Institute of Hydrometeorology (SHMÚ).

Mainly nitrogen oxides and solid particles participate in the high level of pollution. In 1999, the highest level of pollution was in Strojárenská and Štúrova Streets in the city centre, where the average daily concentration of limit IHd was exceeded. Pollution of air with sulphur dioxide is relatively low. In 1999, the highest level of solution with solid pollutants was achieved at the Zlatá Idka Monitor ing Station, where the average annual concentration achieved 68,7 µg.m-3 . At this station, the level of pollution with solid particles exceeded both the daily and annual limits of average concentration (IHd, IHr). The IHd  limit for CO w as exceeded at the Veľká Ida Monitoring Station

Selected statistical characteristics of air pollution evaluated for the period from January 1 to December 31, 1995, 1997 and 1999 for NOx, SO2, fly dust and CO pollutants in the area of Košice.

Conditions for the observance of limit: Concentration of IHd and IHk for fly dust, SO2, NOx and CO must not be exceeded during the current year in more than 5% of cases.

IHr: Average annual concentration of pollutant, IHd: Average daily concentration of pollutant

According to the index classification, localities in the area of Košice belong among the very polluted (Štúrova Street and Veľká Ida) and medium polluted (Strojárenská Street and Podhradová Street) ones.

The average annual concentrations of Cd in the area of Košice belong among the highest values in Slovakia. In 1999, the annual limit vio lation for Cd in fly dust was exceeded in Košice in Strojárenská Street (the only in Slovakia). The highest average annual concentrations of Pb in fly dust in Slovakia were also recorded in 1999 in Košice, Strojárenská Street and in Veľká Ida.

The average annual concentrations of NOx, SO2 and dust from stationary sources determined by the method of mathematical modelling in 1998 are illustrated in map annexes 1 to 3.

Tropospheric ozone

The concentration of tropospheric ozone in air in the City of Košice has been measured for prolonged time by SHMÚ (Slovak Institute of Hydrometeorology) at the Podhradová Monitoring Station.

The short-term limits of ozone for warning and informing the inhabitants were not exceeded at the Podhradová Monitoring Station in Košice in any monitored year (the warning smog limit IH1h = 360 µg.m-3, information limit IH1h = 180 µg.m-3).

The ozone limit for protection of human health, IH8h = 110 µg.m-3, was exceeded once in 1997 and in 1998 during the time interval from 12 o'clock a.m. to 9 o'clock p.m. at the Podhradová Monitoring Station in Košice.

The short-term ozone limit for protection of vegetation IH1h = 200 µg.m-3 was not exceeded at the Podhradová Monitoring Station in Košice, however, the momentary limit for the protection of vegetation IH24h = 65 µg.m-3 was exceeded at the Podhradová station several times (e.g. 36 times in 1997 and 12 times in 1999).

Note: The above-mentioned limit values of tropospheric ozone are in correspondence with the recommendations of the Directive 92/72/EEC.
