What is being done
to solve the problems
The objective is to harmonize operation of air
polluting sources with requirements of the valid Slovak legislation
for air protection.
The current activities in the area of Košice are
mainly aimed at:
- further progress of the gasification of air polluting sources
and gasification of residential areas in the surroundings of the
city.
- further development of the system of central heating in
Košice, replacement of the part of the Municipal Heating Plant
(TEKO Košice), whose servic
e life
is being expired, by construction of the steam-gas cycle or using
geothermal energy from near sources in the surroundings of the
city (Ďurkov).
further modernization and reconstruction of sources of
pollution (dedusting, denitrification and desulphurisation) and
replacement of production technologies, which do not meet
environmental requirements in production enterprises. In Iron and
Steel Works (U.S. Steel Košice) it is for example: dedusting of
sintering bands, dedusting of steel making halls, making the
boilers of the Heating Plant environment-friendly,
desulphurisation of coke-oven gas and other.
modernization and technical completion of the Solid Municipal
Waste Incinerating Plant with additional stages of waste gas
cleaning.
reduction of emissions from automobile transport in the City
of Košice, mainly through rationalization of the city road network
(building up bypasses).
In order to protect the air and ozone layer of the
Earth and for further reduction of emissions of pollutants and
harmful substances, it is necessary to implement particular
investment actions and measures in the sources of air pollution,
which are included in the document called ”National Environmental
Action Programme of the Slovak Republic”. The Regional Environmental
Action Programme was elaborated for the area of Košice. Large
polluters have also elaborated their environmental action programmes
and emission reduction programmes.
The more detailed information on the quality of air
and on sources of air pollution in the Slovak Republic are given by
the Slovak Institute of Hydrometeorology, www.shmu.sk.
