Biodiversity

What is the general situation with the ISSUE?

Characterisation of flora

Košice and its surroundings have a high potential from the point of view of gene pool diversity, because it is located on the boundary line of the West Carpathian and warm Pannonia region. We can find lowland, submontane and mountain species close to each other.

The contemporary state of vegetation is only a remnant of the original natural vegetation. The initial vegetation cover has been changed very much, or completely damaged by intensive or extensive influence of man. The original vegetation is preserved on agriculturally unsuitable or inaccessible territories. In the territory of the town of Košice according to the Act on Nature and Landscape Protection there are designated 2 protected areas, namely the nature reserve Vysoký vrch with the area of 36,50 hectares, and protected area Kavečianska stráň with the area of 3,19 hectares, and 8 protected trees.

The proposed locations for designation as protected areas are:
Hradova – Pastures (Hradová- pasienky) with an area of 2,241 ha
Botanical Garden (Botanická záhrada) – 31,5 ha
Gravel pit Krasna (Štrkovisko Krásna) – water and other surfaces with an area of 44,36 ha
Junction of the Rivers Hornad and Torysa (Sútok Hornádu a Torysy) – water and other surfaces with an area of 10,97 ha.

On the territory of the town and its close vicinity there occur according to the IUCN Red List of protected species of plants in various degrees of endangerment.

Characterisation of fauna

The fauna of the concerned territory represents two zoogeographic zones:

  • forest zoogeographic subprovince,
  • European-Siberian zoogeographic subprovince.

Fauna information retrieval gives evidence of 239 bird species, from that 58 endangered species, 29 amphibian species – reptiles, from that 20 endangered on the territory of Košice. The institutions of the nature protection have an – elaboration of the list of threatened taxons, including the locations where their numbers are rapidly falling.

The most important biotopes of the occurrence of protected species of fauna according to IUCN Red List gives the following table:
