What are the impacts of
this issue
The State Health Institute in Košice monitors the
state of health of the city population for a long time and compares
it with the state in the Košice – Country District, which represents
the hinterland of the city.
In Košice, the average expectancy of life at birth
has reached in along-term the highest level both for men and women
of all districts of the Košice Region. For the period from 1993 to
1995 was 68.2 years for men and 75.8 years for women. In the Košice
– Country District it was 67.6 years for men and 74.2 years for
women. The natural increase in Košice is 3.2‰, against the Slovak
average (1.3). The number of treated diabetics was 3,720.24 per
100, 000 inhabitants in 1997, that is under the nation-wide
average, that has achieved a value of 4,178.51.

The incidence of connate developmental defects
differs in both of monitored areas. In Košice, this value was 128.5
per 10,000 of live births in 1997. In the Košice – Country District
this indicator is high for a long time, achieving the value of
299.6. The nation-wide average achieves the value of 214.2. The
decrease in natal death rate was recorded in Košice in comparison
with previous years, however, it has still remained higher than the
nation-wide average. The number of abortions has a decreasing
tendency since 1992 both in the Slovak Republic and in Košice.

The incidence of diseases of the dispensary
respiratory system diseases of children, as well as the incidence of
allergies of the respiratory system of children in Košice is the
highest in comparison with the adjacent districts and it is related
to long-lasting air pollution in Košice. For more than 30 years the
air had been polluted with magnesite dust. The Magnesite Works were
put out of operation in 1996, but the secondary dustiness has
survived. The Integrated Iron - and Steelworks located south of
Košice has a negative impact upon the health of population. Approx.
12,500 inhabitants living in 8 residential districts, that are
located in the zone of special hygienic regime, are immediately
affected. The death rate due to diseases of the respiratory system
has a decreasing trend. In spite of this fact, this value is higher
than the nation-wide average.
The highest mortality of population has been
related for a long time to diseases of the circulatory system. In
1997, 419.4 deaths occurred per 100,000 inhabitants in Košice and
589.4 deaths occurred in the Košice – Country District in the above
diagnostic group. As it was shown by statistical values from the
year 2000, these values have a decreasing trend.
Tumours are the second most frequent cause of the
death. While mortality in the city caused by this diagnose is lower
than in Slovakia, in the Košice – Country District it is higher than
the nation-wide average.
The incidence of malignant tumours both in men and
women is high in Košice for a long time, above the level in
Slovakia. The incidence of treated malignant tumours in children in
the Košice Conurbation belongs among the highest ones within the
framework of adjacent districts.
