What is the general situation with the
ISSUE
Mineral deposits and reserves of geothermal water
belong among the important natural resources in the hinterland of
the city. Deposits of granodiorite and ceramic clays are only of
local significance.
What is causing the problems
The environment of Košice is affected mainly by the
following environmental geology:
- intensive development of slope
deformations in the eastern district of the city,
- subsidence of undermined area caused by
mining activity,
- devastation of lands caused by open-pit
mining of minerals,
- deposition of waste from the exploitation
and beneficiation of minerals,
- radiation of the geological environment,
- possible manifestations of seismic
activity.
What are the
impacts of this ISSUE
The housing construction at the Dargovských hrdinov
Housing Estate with the population exceeding 30,000, was implemented
under very complex engineering geological conditions. Actions for
the stabilization of slopes were taken during the construction of
the housing estate, and continue until the present time.
What is being
done to fix the problems
- To ensure general stability of slopes east
of the Hornád River should be made the following actions:
- additional sub-horizontal drills of
holes on slopes,
- building up new monitoring fixed
trigonometrical stations for the measurement of slope movements,
- making functional all surface channels
and horizontal drill holes, which were drilled on the edges of
slopes,
- by checking and measuring the yield of
horizontal drill holes,
- surveying fixed trigonometrical
stations,
- prompt carrying out repairs of the
defects of water mains and sewers on borders of housing
districts,
- by renewal of plantations and by reforestation of part of
slopes with suitable woody plants.
- ...
