Noise

What is the general situation with the ISSUE

Excessive noisiness belongs among the negative impacts of traffic in Košice upon the environment. Its intensity varies in time, but there is an obvious tendency of the permanent increase in the number of various types of transportation means, and the adverse effect of noisiness upon the environs of transportation routes is permanently increased. On the other hand it should be stated that current cars are less noisy, and the wagon fleet of the Transportation Enterprise of the Košice Municipality is being gradually renewed, where the new means of transportation have much quieter operation.

 What is causing the problems

The current intensity of traffic on roads in the city causes that the roads are excessively loaded, mainly in peak hours between 8 and 9 o'clock a.m. and 1 and 4 o'clock p.m. during drives from residential districts to the city centre, when capacities of roads are fully exploited, and the crossroads are overloaded with vehicles.

What are the impacts of this ISSUE

The measurements of noisiness were carried out in some sections of roads with excessive noise and their effect upon the block of flats located in the close vicinity of these roads were evaluated within the study programme and teaching at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical University Košice. On the basis of these measurements, parameters of noise barrier, whose effects will be evaluated after carrying out repeated measurements.

What is being done to fix the problems

It is necessary to remove by successive steps the following problems, which causes excessive noisiness:

  • to build up the system of bypass roads (see graphical annex) out of the residential areas, and to reroute all transit freight and passenger transport (which only passes through the city), as well as all possible city mass transportation to these bypass roads,

  • to prefer municipal mass transportation – trolley-bus, tram and bus over automobile transport,

  • ...
