The municipal waste from the territory of Košice is
disposed in the Ekothermal ’99 Municipal Waste Incinerating Plant
(the KOSIT firm since August 1, 2001). The municipal waste is
collected by Technical Services of the City of Košice and by the
AsaFura Company. The incinerating plant with the capacity for the
disposal of 120,000 tons of municipal waste annually is exploited
for approx. 40 – 50%.
In the period from 1972 up to the putting of the
incinerating plant into operation in 1992, the municipal waste from
the territory of Košice was disposed to the landfill near the
village of Myslava, on the western periphery of Košice. Approx. 2
million m3 of waste was deposited in this landfill and
its capacity has been exhausted. Disposal of ash and cinder from the
incinerating plant was allowed under special conditions in this
landfill until 1994. The landfill of the 3rd building
class was in operation from 1996 to 1999, and 41,000 m3
of wastes were deposited here. At the present time, the waste from
the incinerating plant is disposed out of the territory of Košice.
Until 2000 the waste from health facilities was disposed in the
hospital incinerating plant which met environmental requirements for
the protection of air after its adaptation, but now it is out of
operation due to technical reasons. This type of waste is being
disposed out of the territory of Košice.
U.S. Steel Košice is the largest producer of
industrial waste. The waste is of various consistency and
physical-chemical properties and originates as a side product from
technological processes. The waste is disposed in landfills and
facilities within the production area.
Three landfills have been established in the
territory of Košice for the disposal of building rubbish, namely:
