Water supply

What are the impacts of this issue

Both surface and underground waters are used as a source for supplying the population with drinking water, in industry and in agriculture. There are activities, when water is taken from the source. After its use in the production process, it is returned back to the recipient with qualitative and quantitative changes. These changes adversely affect the quality of water at individual recipients in respect to the fact that wastewater purification is insufficient in many cases, or is non existent. The threat to the quality of drinking water sources increases the strenuousness of its treatment to the required quality before its distribution. It is difficult to treat water in some sources of underground water according hygienic requirements due to their apparent or latent pollution and they are proposed to put them out of operation.

The impairment of the quality of surface waters is manifested downstream the sewage treatment plant in Kokšov – Bakša. The sewage treatment plant is overloaded with the quantity of wastewaters by approx. 1/3 (the designed capacity is 700 l.s-1, reality is 800 – 1,000 l.s-1) and insufficiently treated water is drained into the Hornád River. It is possible to state that a distinct improvement can be expected after putting the biological stage of the new sewage treatment plant into trial operation by September 1, 2001, which will also use excess gas for the generation of electric power.
