Water supply |
What is the general situation with the
ISSUE
Surface waters
The river network of Košice consists of the Hornád River, running
from the north to the south, and its tributaries, Ťahanovský potok
(Brook), Črmeľ (Brook), Myslavský potok (B rook) and Sokoliansky potok (Brook) belonging to the Bodrog
and Hornád River Basin.
Underground water
An area important for water management – alluvial
deposits of the Hornád River – interlopes the territory of the city
from Družstevná pri Hornáde up to the state border.
Drinking water supply
Košice is supplied with drinking water from the Košice public
water main. In addition to Košice, several villages from the Košice
– Country District are supplied from this water main.

What is causing the problems
The main problems affecting the quality of both
underground and surface water include the increased content of
biogenic elements P and N, the content of heavy metals and the
content of specific organic compounds in the water environment.
These problems are associated with industrial production –
insufficient treatment of produced industrial wastewaters, obsolete
technologies, the use of agrochemicals in agriculture, but primary
it is the insufficient (or none) treatment of sewage
water.
What are the
impacts of this ISSUE
Both surface and underground waters are used as a
source for supplying the population with drinking water, in industry
and in agriculture. There are activities, when water is taken from
the source. After its use in the production process, it is returned
back to the recipient with qualitative and quantitative changes.
What is being
done to fix the problems
From the point of view of the protection of water
against its pollution and impairment, at first it is necessary to
remove causes of its pollution. An increased attention should be
paid to agricultural production – applications of agrochemicals and
wastewater from livestock production, waste landfills, product
pipelines, roads, but above all, it is necessary to solve the issues
of adequate wastewater treatment.
