What is the general situation with the ISSUE?

List of the gene pool important locations on the territory of Košice

The gene pool important locations represent territories with the occurrence of rare and protected flora and fauna species.

Special position holds the ZOO and Botanical Garden. In the Botanical Garden in the territory of 31,5 ha are concentrated representatives of our indigenous and introduced flora. At the present the area fulfils pedagogic-didactic and scientific- research tasks.

The original stand is made up of oak and hornbeam (Querceto-Carpinetum), which is in the highest part attached to the oak forest of Bankov. This vegetation community is supplemented by various compositions of wood species in tree and shrub formations. The occurrence of 59 bird species was found. Dominant bird species are blackbird (Turdus merula), blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and robin redbreast (Erithacus rubecula).

On the territory of the town of Košice the gene pool areas are on the following locations:

Forest biotope

Vysoký vrch (High Hill)

A forest complex on an area of 36,5 ha. A gene pool important location is formed of 80-100 year-old stand of silver fir (Abies alba) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) with admixture of sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Wych elm (Ulmus glabra).

The importance of the territory is exemplified by the occurrence of indigenous species of avifauna. Pygmy owl nests here (Glaucidium passerinum), Ural owl (Strix uralensis), tawny owl (Strix aluco), hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia), goldcrest (Regulus regulus), firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus), black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) and other species.

Čermeľské údolie (Čermeľ Valley)

Area 760 ha. The complex of the forest is due to strong anthropic influences (recreation, communication lines, economic activity and other) structured to smaller units of the same significance. On the territory of Horný Čermeľ (Upper Čermeľ) there are fragments of original stands of silver fir and European beech with undergrowth. Dolný Čermeľ (Lower Čermeľ) is characterised by submontane oak and oak-hornbeam forests. As an admixture locally there are fragments of linden-maple forests. The occurrence of the protected species of club-moss (Lycopodium annotinum and Lycopodium clavatum) was recorded in the undergrowth.

Kamenný hrb (Stone Hunchback)

Area 139 ha. A peak community of silver fir, silver fir -- European beech and oak-hornbeam stands. The exclusivity of the territory is substantiated by nesting occurrence of pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum), Ural owl (Strix uralensis), Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus), three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), lesser spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor), white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos), middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus) and others.

From botanical point of view the damp meadows under the Kamenný hrb are important due to relict occurrence of hydrophilous flora. It is the case of the species from the family Orchidaceae: Dactylorhiza majalis, Dactylorhiza incarnata, Gymnadenia conopsea, Platanthera bifolia, Dactylorhiza sambucina and others.

Forest complex Kodydom

Area 115 ha. It is an isolated complex of forest growth in agriculturally intensively exploited land. English oak (Quercus robur) together with European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) dominates in the stands. There are local enclaves with black pine (Pinus nigra), and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is retained in marginal zones. The territory is an important refugium of animal species, especially insects, as for example carabid beetles: Carabus violaceris, Carabus granulatus, Carabus scheidleri, and long horn beetle Cerambyx cerdo. Of amphibians spadefoot toad (Pelobates fuscus) can be found here.

Area 5 ha. The rock alone is formed of limestone with noticeable manifestations of the surface and underground karst. In the cave space is a known winter habitat of the large mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), lesser mouse-eared bat (Myotis blythi), and the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros).

The summit part is botanically valuable, with thermophilous plant communities, association Seslerietum varie.

The associative species are blue sesleria (Sesleria varia), Aconitum anthora, valerian (Valeriana tripteris), (Centaurea montana).

In the herbal undergrowth of oak-hornbeam stands a massive occurrence of Arum alpinum, (Lunaria rediviva, Martagon lily (Lilium martagon) was recorded, and rich colonies are created by snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis).

Forest complex, located SW of the hill Na Valalskom, in the upper part of Čermeľské údolie

Area 52 ha. A continuous forest coat of oak-hornbeam stands, where European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), durmast oak (Quercus petraea) dominate in the tree storey, and locally in the thicker connections joins the European little-leaf linden (Tilia cordata) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica). In the shrub layer field maple (Acer campestre), hazelnut (Corylus avellana) and Cornus sanguinea prevail. Herbal scrub is formed of Carex pilosa communities.

Forest complex NE of Alpinka – Verčová

Area 84 ha. An oak-hornbeam growth, durmast oak (Quercus petraea), European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) dominate with an admixture of European beech and field maple.

Čermeľské údolie (Čermeľ Valley) SW of Alpinka

Area 8 ha. The forest complex is due to strong anthropic influences (recreation, communication lines, economic activity and other) structured to smaller units of the same signification. On the territory of the Upper Čermeľ (Horný Čermeľ) there are fragments of original growths of silver fir and common beech. The Lower Čermeľ (Dolný Čermeľ) is characterised by submontane oak and oak-hornbeam woods. Locally there are ascending fragments of linden-maple forests. In herbal growth was recorded occurrence of protected species club moss (Lycopodium annotinum and Lycopodium clavatum).

Forest complex Jahodná

Area 108 ha. An oak-hornbeam growth strongly influenced by forestry activities. It provides suitable nesting possibilities for birds nesting in cavities.

THE ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN IN KOŠICE – KAVEČANY

The zoological garden in Košice is one of the four zoological gardens in Slovakia.

In the municipal quarter Košice-Kavečany, a modern zoological garden is being built since 1979 that is oriented mainly to Euro-Asian fauna which is bred in spaces being similar to natural conditions with respect to size and character. The acreage of 292 hectares of this zoological garden belongs to the three largest zoological gardens in Europe. From the total acreage, the area of 288 hectares is stocked by the beech forest. The area of one third of the total acreage is designed for visitors where the breeding facilities are being built gradually. A part of the remaining surface was already used to establish the reservation of Equus Caballus, the other part of the remaining surface was used to constitute the quarantine, hospital, infirmary, farming yards and storage rooms but mainly to build the breeding station for rare and proprietary species of mainly Carpathian fauna. For animals as well as visitors were created protected natural conditions that allow to breed various animal species very successfully and they attract to visit the zoological garden for a minimum of half day tour.

The managers of this zoological garden endeavour to create optimum natural conditions for all animals. The zoological garden area is being built gradually and the individual breeding facilities are improved continuously.

The inauguration of the breeding facilities was held on July 2, 1986 and the first visitors have had the possibility to see 23 animal species.

Animals bred in the zoological garden

In the zoological garden in Košice, there can be admired by visitors 124 animal species in the total number of 860 heads. The Equus Caballus (hucul) was the first breeding animal in zoological garden in Košice. This species is one of the most successful breeding results of the zoological garden tenders. The zoological garden has accomplished successfully the breeding of more than 80 foals keepers successfully whereby it contributed to the retrieval of this only autochthon horse species. In 1996 this breeding has been enlisted in the gene pool of Slovak Republic. These horses are used in hippodrome and their usage for hippotherapeutics and intraplant transport is in preparation. In the zoological garden the surfarce of 11 hectares beyond the visitorc s zone was detached to allow them to preserve their typical natural trails such as hardiness, unfastidiousness and good bearing to human beings.

Other typical protected representatives of Carpathian fauna are also bred and reproduced in this zoological garden very successfully. As well as is the other animal species from Asia, Africa, Australia and America.

Panthera Tigris Sumatrae, Ursus Arctos, Papio Hamadryas, Lynx Lynx, Equus Przewalskii, Equus Caballus (Shetland), Equus Burchellii Chapmani, Dromaius Novaehollandiae, Bos Mutus D., but also the representatives of sharks, owls, waterfowls, decorative poultry, parrots and also original species of agricultural animals belong to the most attractive and rare animals bred in this zoological garden.

At the entrance to the zoological garden is situated the exotarium and minivivarium. Here you can find Eunectes Notaeus, Python Molurus Biva, Caiman Crokodylus, Iguana Igauna, Epicrates Angulifer. The various species of exotic parrots and aquarium fishes may be admired by the zoological garden visitors. In the exotarium spaces is prepared a terrarium for small tamarine simian which will entertain the visitors of the ZOO.

Since May 2000, the outdoor summer pen is available for turtles where water and terrestrial turtles are bred.

Building up in the zoological garden

We are very proud of our breeding facilities with the acreage of 2 800 m2 to breed bears where the original vesture of grass, forests, bushes and water-course were preserved. The zoological garden visitors may observe the bears from behind a fence secured by electric closure. This facility is located in the ZOO in Košice only and was opened on May 1, 2001. The original breeding facilities will be re-constructed gradually to breed also other animal species.

After finishing the planned re-construction of breeding facilities, the zoological garden visitors will have the possibility to see more than 300 animal species of all continents, but the orientation to Carpathian fauna will have always a priority.

Activities of the zoological garden

Our zoological garden pays attention to cultural and education co-operation with schools of all levels organising discussions, discourses, screening films, installing exhibitions of animal photos thus to contribute in the environmental education of children.

The acquired knowledge may be used in the education process too. In the zoological garden area many culture undertakings, presentation days of schools and companies of Košice, some undertakings during important environmental events are organised. It co-operates with artistic and youth organisation (such as Centre of Free Time, Fenix, Elán).

How to support the zoological garden?

A very effective way to support the zoological garden is the Adoption of an Animal. The adoption means the compensation of yearly costs for the feeding of the animal by selecting an animal from the list of bred animals and so you become the adoptive parent – sponsor for one year. This adoption serves also as your advertisement in the zoological garden area because every adoptive parent will have the label with his/her name located nearby the label with animal's name.

In 2001, 47 animals were adopted by the above mentioned way. Schoolchildren, deputies of town parliament, employees of the town council are very active in animal adoptions. Some animals were also adopted by the members of Slovakian Associations residing abroad (Prague, Pardubice, Ohio, USA).
