


The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality area has succeeded in becoming a major
contributor to the economy of Gauteng. Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality contributes
the second largest output (22,21%) after Johannesburg (31,99%). Considering the
absence of any significant mineral resource, airport or seaport, the ranking that
Pretoria makes is very significant. Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and
Johannesburg are accounted for 54% of the total output of Gauteng.

The benefit of TMM in this regard is that it has a captive market (government sector)
contributing 40% to the economy of the area. Annual average is expected to continue
to grow at a rate of between 2-3% per annum. It would be advised that government
servicing be studied to establish the potential for certain kinds of businesses to be
set up to provide goods and services. Although the local government has committed
itself to reducing the deficit on the national accounts, it does not imply that the
government sector will decline as a major contributor to the economy of the Tshwane
