 Air quality

The Riga City Council have included a set of measures in the Official Plan which, if consistently implemented, would improve the quality of the environment in the city:

  • design of a scheme of environmental policies to achieve the compatibility of the environmental quality in the city with that of international standards and norms
  • reduction of pollution caused by transport by means of spatial planning, regulation of traffic flows, stricter controls, economic measures and informing and educating the public
  • giving priority to public transport and, in particular, those means of transport that have the highest passenger carrying capacity, that take up least street space and that are least polluting
  • detailed planning of Riga's centre bearing in mind the need to preserve the present greenery areas and their quality, as well as to increase the role of greenery in ensuring better air quality
  • preparation of long-term strategic plans for energy development providing for steps to be taken at stages of energy production, transportation and consumption, all based on principles of efficient and sound use of energy and heat
  • preparation of a housing development scheme containing provisions for heat saving
  • support to introduction of such types of fuel that produce least harmful emissions; application of efficient emission treatment facilities by economic means
  • design of an efficient energy saving scheme with the involvement in the process of the private sector and support of their initiatives
