Information about this report

State of the Environment in the City of Riga 2001 is produced by Riga City Environment Centre "Agenda 21" and has been prepared on the basis of several publications and planning policy documents adopted by the Riga City Council, as well as statistical data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

The key publications used are the following:

  • Riga City Official Plan (1995-2005)
  • City of Riga Environmental Strategy (2000-2010 )
  • Riga Transport Policy (1999-2003)
  • Organization of traffic in Riga (Riga City Council Traffic Department, 2001)
  • Riga City towards Sustainability (collected papers, 2001)
  • Riga Economic Environment 2002 (survey by I. Francis, G. Ruskuls, R. Grinbergs)
  • Riga in Figures 2001: Statistical Yearbook
  • Riga in Figures 2002: Statistical Yearbook*
  • Tourism in Latvia 2001: Statistical Bulletin
  • State Inspection of Heritage Protection (homepage: www.mantojums.lv)

The illustrations and tables have also partly been taken from the sources mentioned above.

Janis Kleperis from the Department of Environment, Riga City Council and Marita Nikmane from the joint Latvian-Swedish project "Daugava River Basin" participated as experts and consultants. Valuable information was also provided by the Departments of Environment, Traffic, City Development and Welfare, Riga City Council.


The report has been prepared in co-operation with the programme "Cities Environmental Reports On Internet" and support from UNEP/GRID-Arendal (consultants Ieva Rucevska, Janet Fernandez Skaalvik, Geir Andrew).

* Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia informs, that "..In some cases data for 2000 have been revised in comparison with those published carlier. Data for the period between 1990 and 1999  that were calculated per 1 inhabitant or per 100, 1 000, 10 000 or 100 000 inhabitants have been revised on the basis of  results of the 2000 Population Census. In some tables data on 2001 are preliminary and may be revised in forthcoming issues.."
