The geographical location of Riga on the shores of the Baltic Sea in the area rich with the forests, coastal meadows, lakes and small rivers forms preconditions of wide diversity both biotopes and species within urban environment of Riga.

In contrast to the high urbanization level at the center, unique biotopes are found on the coastal areas and outskirts. There are six protected areas of nature of national importance in Riga, of which five are nature reserves.
Forests contribute to the diversity of nature in the city, as well.
Riga 's parks and gardens
present the variety of the species and sorts of the trees and the bushes.
