Cultural and Historical heritage

   What is the general situation?

Latvian heritage sites include individual territories, places, buildings and objects, and are a part of the world's cultural historical heritage. As cultural monuments, they are united by their individual values, be they historical, scientific, artistic or other. Their maintenance serves the interests not only of our country and people, but the interests of world cultural and historical heritage preservation.

Within the Republic of Latvia, there are 8428 protected heritage sites. The greater part of these sites are architectural monuments - 3364 architectural sites, 2495 archaeological sites, 2414 artistic sites. However, there are only 111 historical sites, and 44 urban building sites.

Within the City of Riga , there are 1664 protected heritage sites - 1161 architectural sites, 453 artistic sites, 40 historic sites, 4 urban building sites and 6 archaeological sites (see Figure 59).

The inclusion of the historic centre of Riga (which includes buildings in the old city and art nouveau area) in the UNESCO world cultural and natural heritage list in 1997 is attestation to the significance of Latvian heritage sites.
