Green areas

Dry land nature ecosystems and surface water ecosystems form natural heritage and unique value with ever-increasing importance of the City. To create the sound environment and to give special priority to nature areas the "green-blue" structure, which present green open space of the City was included into the Official Plan of the City of Riga.

Green areas of the City is formed by six different, but interconnected nature elements:

  • forests
  • greenery
  • meadows
  • watercourses and embankments
  • allotment of gardens
  • fallow lands

Green open space make up 54.2 % from total area of the City, including natural and designed green areas -36.6% and water surfaces -17.6 %.
