Green areas

 What is the general situation with the green areas?

In the Official Plan of Riga, functions and state of green open space are defined, but use of them should be elaborated and precise in details.

According to the data presented in the Official Plan green open space make up 16 652 ha or 54.2 %., including natural and designed green areas - 11 252 ha or 36.6% and water surfaces - 5 400 ha or 17.6 %. Overall, green open space of Riga makes up 211 m2 per inhabitant.  

The mentioned data is the result of evaluation of 1995. As because of economical activities followed by build up the green areas within the City, to receive more precise and detailed data about present situation, inventory of the green areas are needed.

Green areas of the City is formed by six different, but interconnected nature elements:

Despite that, incorporation of the green open space could be considered as positive tendency in the City development, since 1995 during its operation there have been straight attempts to interpret the Official plan to suit economic interests. It should be highlighted that green areas under particular risk and those around the watercourses and in the City centre. Besides it, some of greenery does not have owners or managers.
