People and the social environment

 What we can do to make a difference 

  To improve the social environment in the city the Riga City Council is determined to implement the following priority action programme:

  • Carrying out of a comprehensive and complex assessment of the social situation. On the basis of such assessment, a comprehensive policy for the improvement of the social environment in Riga is to be designed incorporating extensively the idea of sustainable development of the city and its people
  • Raising of the level of education as a means to prevent unemployment, homeless youth, drug-addiction and other negative features in society
  • Design of a labour re-qualification programme with an emphasis on the training of environmental specialists
  • Rapid implementation of the "Policy document for health care in the Greater Riga region"
  • Promotion of co-operation among national and municipal bodies, NGOs and the wider public on matters related to the social environment; regular work with the mass media
  • Promotion of active involvement and interest of inhabitants in fostering and ensuring their own social security and health

 To decrease the risk of disease in the city the Riga City Council is determined to implement the following priority action programme:

  • Establishment of a programme for the improvement of the epidemiological situation in Riga working together with the Riga's Environmental Health Centre
  • Establishment of health monitoring in Riga together with the Riga's Environmental Health Centre
  • Provision of hygienic inspection:
    • for territorial planning
    • for introduction of new products and technologies
    • for projects of re-construction and building of industrial sites and enterprises
  • Provision of comprehensive food quality control mechanisms.
  • Immunisation to the highest extent possible of inhabitants of all age groups.
  • Education of people on the preservation and improvement of the environment and health

 

The Environmental Strategy intends to stress the role of the social environment within the context of sustainable development and improved natural environment, however, only a general overview of the social problems has been included as specific action should be taken after formulating the city's social policy.
