Because of the geographical location of
Riga in Piejuras lowland on the estuary of Daugava River, the City is rich with small rivers and lakes. They are one of the natural values of Riga City as rivers and lakes form the landscape and serve as the easy available recreational resource for the public.

Therefore, the quality of drinking and surface water, as well as efficient treatment of waste-water are issues of vital importance to be addressed if decent quality of the urban environment, economic development and better living conditions are to be ensured. The quality and availability of water are closely linked with other processes on-going in the city and its surroundings.
