What is being done to solve the problems
 Within the
framework of the Riga Water and Environment Project approved by the
Riga City Council, municipal company " Rigas Udens" are implementing
the following projects:
-
modernisation
of the Daugava water treatment plant
-
reconstruction of the Daugavgriva wastewater treatment plant
-
reconstruction of the wastewater pumping station
-
reconstruction
of the water and sewage system, etc.
Until now has been
finished 1st phase (1997. - 2001.) of the Project. Main
outputs of it are:
-
design for ground
water pumping station "Baltezers" and water
intake
-
design and
reconstruction of networks in the central part of the
city
-
reconstruction of
water treatment plant "Daugava" with installation ozonation
system
-
reconstruction of aeration and sludge
dewatering system at wastewater treatment plane "D
augavgriva"
-
connection of 70%
population to the centralized wastewater collection
system
-
construction of a
communications tunnel in the aquatorium of the
riga free
port
The
Riga City Council has granted LVL 230 000 for the installation of
water meters in flats of low-income households.
State
environmental institutions are providing environmental monitoring
within the City according to the state
requirements.
In 1995
Environmental Department of Riga City Council created monitoring
network (16 monitoring sites) of the City to assess the inland water
quality. This monitoring was into operation from 1996 to 1998. The
monitoring was stopped because of financial shortages and lack of
political will.
