The water in the Daugava River can be considered as moderately polluted in the territory of Riga. The quality of water in the river is very much impacted by the pollution created in the Daugava River drainage basin. Water quality in Riga 's lakes and smaller rivers suffers from pollution sources in the city. Once nutrient poor, now the lakes of the city are burdened with excessive concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic substances. In general, water quality in the city's water bodies is poor and showing a tendency of further deterioration.

 WATER QUALITY IN SWIMMING AREAS

There are two official swimming sites in Riga - Vecaki and Vakarbuli . Water analyses performed at the sites by the Riga's Environmental Health Centre have produced negative hygienic results. In 1998, it was recommended not to swim in Riga's lakes.

Groundwater is considerably cleaner than surface water, however, quality problems exist. For the most part, problems arise with groundwater that is virtually unshielded against pollution. This happens in cases where there is a thin aeration layer containing earth permeable to water.

Because of prolonged, uncontrolled and unbalanced utilisation of groundwater during sixties and seventies, a groundwater  cone of depression has formed in the central part of the country with its centre in Riga (the Greater Riga depression).   WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Wastewater in Riga is being treated at the Daugavgriva treatment plant, which is the largest of its kind in the Baltic States. This plant can cope with wastewater generated by as many as 400-500 thousand inhabitants. Over the recent years, a number of positive tendencies have developed in the sphere of wastewater treatment.

 DRINKING WATER

The drinking water in Riga comes from groundwater (there are groundwater pumping stations such as Baltezers, Zakumuiza and others) and the Daugava.

Over the past years, it can be said that the overall quality of water in the centralised water supply network has changed for the better.

In certain cases, however, the chemical and microbiological sanitary indicators do not meet the national standards, which alarms residents as their health is subject to serious potential risks.
