Measures

In the middle of 2000, Riga City Council adopted the City of Riga Environmental Strategy (2000-2010). The goal of the Environmental Strategy is to create preconditions for sustainable development in Riga by solving priority environmental problems and preventing their causes. Implementation of the Strategy is only possible in Riga if all the available environment management means and instruments are used. The following measures must be used to resolve environmental problems and provide for future development in the city:

In the area of Environmental Strategy, measures, apart from management, co-operation, projects and research have been highlighted. They will play an important role in the implementation of the Environmental Strategy.

Depending on the type of problems, combined approaches will be sought to implement the Environmental Strategy - the most efficient combination of means, depending on the availability of resources.

The Action Programme of the Environmental Strategy (2002-2010), adopted by Riga City Council in the middle of 2002, consists of specific programmes, projects and activities focusing on reaching the goals defined by the City of Riga Environmental Strategy.

Among other significant direct outcomes, the establishment of the Riga City Environment Centre "Agenda 21" is an important result in the Environment Strategy preparation phase. Agenda 21 will take the responsibility for information, education and co-ordination in relation to environmental issues in the Riga City.
