 Transport

The Riga City Council has included a set of measures in the Official Plan (1995-2005):

  • reduction of pollution caused by transport by means of spatial planning, regulation of traffic flows, stricter controls, economic measures and informing and educating the public
  • giving priority to public transport and, in particular, those means of transport that have the highest passenger carrying capacity, that take up least street space and that are least polluting
  • detailed planning of Riga's centre bearing in mind the need to preserve the present greenery areas and their quality, as well as to increase the role of greenery in ensuring better air quality

The Riga City Council acknowledges that its action so far has not been efficient enough to put into practice those priorities in the Official Plan that concern improvement of air quality and public transport. The air quality in the city cannot guarantee healthy living environment for the people and normal functioning of ecosystems. With the traffic intensity continuing to grow at current rate, fast deterioration of the air quality can be expected.
