Transport
The
Traffic Department of Riga City
Council has undertaken the implementation of the priority tasks set
by Riga City Council.
From 1997 to 2001 a number of
significant documents have been made on improvement of traffic
organization, and several projects have been implemented:

Riga Traffic Policy from 1999 to 2003 has been
prepared and approved by Riga City Council

Bicycle Development Programme has been
prepared and approved by Riga City Council
-
Proposals for economical development model of
public transport in Riga City have been prepared
-
Modernization project for street lighting and
traffic control center of the greater Riga region has been
prepared
Quality management system for works has been
prepared
-
Project
for reorganization of traffic in Old Riga has been
prepared
-
A
non-cash payment system for entry into Old Riga has been
introduced
-
The World Bank loan for modernization of
public transport has been utilized, a tender has been carried out for purchase of new buses
-
Reconstruction of rainwater sewerage collector
station at Skanstes street has been started
-
Around 3.3 million sq.m. of street surface has
been renovated
Around 75 sq.m. of bridge and overpass surface
has been renovated With the purpose of
acquisition of experience, and in order to receive latest
information on organization of traffic in the world and in Europe,
Riga City has joined the international organization UITP
(International Union of Public Transport), but the Traffic
Department is a member of AET (Association of European Transport).
Since 1997 until 1999 Riga City has taken
part in the JUPITER (Joint Urban Project in Transport Energy
Reduction) project financed by the European Union dealing with use
of environmentally friendly fuel; Traffic Department has also been a
partner in PIRATE (Promoting Interchange Rationale, Accessibility
& Transfer) project on organization of effective passenger
transfer from one mode of transport to another. Currently Traffic
Department has joined COST 342 (Parking Policy Measures and their
Effects on Mobility and Economy) project covering parking policy
issues.
