AIR
TRANSPORTATION
Riga
International
Airport
is the largest in the Baltic
States
and it provides transportation for international passengers and air
cargo. Passenger turnover in 2001 was 622,600. Apart from the
national carrier "Air Baltic", regular flights from
Riga
airport are provided by such well-known airlines as "British
Airlines", "Lufthansa", "SAS", etc.
SEA
TRANSPORTATION
All
through history the port has been one of the main development
factors and source of wealth of Riga. Today, the Riga Trade Terminal has free port
status with a free custom zone regime. The cargo turnover in 2001
was 14.9 million tons. The Riga Passenger Terminal also has huge
potential, but modernization of the wharfs infrastructure and a new
passenger terminal is necessary. In 2001, services of the passenger
terminal were used by 51.1 thousand
passengers.
RAILROAD
TRANSPORTATION
Riga's
railroad network was developed at the end of 19th century mainly for
freight transportation. It has been used intensively for a long time
in various economic conditions. At present the city's railroad
network is used for freight and passenger transportation. From the
environmental protection point of view
Riga
is interested to move freight by railroad but providing that
potentially hazardous material transport does not go through city
centre.
INTERNATIONAL MOTOR VEHICLE
TRANSPORT
With
the improvement of international contacts the volume, routes and
distances of transportation are also increasing. Passenger transport
abroad is growing. This increases passenger turnover and
Riga's
importance as transportation junction for the
Baltic
States.
