  Waste management

 AMOUNT OF GENERATED WASTE

One third of Latvia 's population lives in Riga ; at the same time, Riga accounts for about 40% of the total household waste produced in Latvia . In 2000, the following amount of waste had been produced in Riga (see Table 5).

Data on the amount of waste are approximate, because there are more than 44 thousand landowners in Riga, and the current waste accounting system does not provide for comprehensive information about the producers of household waste: private landowners, co-operatives, house management units, commercial enterprises, central government and local government authorities, plants and health care institutions. Inaccuracy is also caused by the fact that household waste for disposal at waste disposal sites is accepted according to cubic, not weight measures.
The amount of solid household waste per capita in Riga in 1995 was 1.1m3, but in 1999 it reached 1.7 m3 per capita (see Figure 10 ).

Over the last 3 years, the amount of waste produced per capita constituted approximately 1.6 m3, and there is no tendency for increase.
