 Waste management

In order to organise waste management in the city, several projects have been implemented over the past few years, including projects with the participation of foreign partners. The draft plan for Riga City Solid Waste Management 1994 - 2005 has been developed. Based on the results obtained, the Waste Management Concept has been developed setting forth six goals aimed at the organisation of waste management:

  • To encourage the use of recycled packaging of goods
  • To reduce the amount of waste produced by households and enterprises by taking administrative and financial measures
  • To introduce the collection of waste for recycling and reduce the amount of waste to be dumped by recycling such waste
  • To set up an earmarked system of financing to manage waste
  • To create and maintain a hygienic and environment-friendly waste management system in Riga
  • To reduce the pollution of the environment caused by waste management
  • Within the framework of the Waste Management Plan, 12 pilot projects have been implemented in the city, the most important ones being:
    • the pilot project for the collection of sorted household waste in three residential areas of the city - Centrs, Vidzeme and Kurzeme districts
    • the creation of the waste producer recording system
    • setting up of a separate waste management department on a commercial basis
    • drafting of tender provisions for the collection and transportation of waste

To implement the Solid Waste Management Project at the Getlini site, the non-profit organisation "Getlini-EKO" Ltd was established in 1998.
