 WATER QUALITY IN SWIMMING AREAS

There are two official swimming sites in Riga - Vecaki and Vakarbulli . But the residents also use for recreation Lakes Velnezers, Linezers, Gailezers, Dambezers and Kisezers, the Babelite and the gravel-pits in the territory of the city. Water analyses performed at the sites by the Riga 's Environmental Health Centre have produced negative hygienic results (see Figure 30 ). In 1998, it was recommended not to swim in Riga 's lakes. Unfortunately, many issues of water contamination have not been identified yet, but in order to deal with them water quality examinations have to be carried out first.
