Energy

  What is being done to make the energy system more environment-friendly

The use of the stock of geothermal waters is prospective in Tbilisi proceeding from water temperature and debt. However, in the city's energy balance there is only 4 thou m3/day of geothermal waters used, mainly, for the purpose of hot water supply of Tbilisi Saburtalo district.

In the conditions of existing energy crisis and, generally, because of topicality of rational use of resources, the great significance is attributed to exploration of geothermal energy. This source of energy is a basic, renewable resource for the city. It should be taken into account that by expert assessments, the hydrogeologic and geothermal parameters of Tbilisi and its environs enable of planning of the several geothermal circulative systems.

The knowledge of citizens and their readiness for the use of alternative energy sources is quite high, but because of inaccessibility of technologies, the use of alternative energy sources (solar and other) does not take place: it could be considered that there are practically no examples of use of such sources of energy in the city. At the same time, there is quite a big potential for the use of noted sources by well-off citizens.

For the end of 1998 the Tbilisi Electric Distribution Net was privatised: the selling of control packages of electric distribution and manufacturing companies has started. The independent commission was created, responsible for the conduct of this process. The commission had to protect the consumer interests and the receiving of incomes from the privatisation of electric energy public sector.

Since January 1999 the AES Telasi has started operating the purchased network. The current plans of the company are:

  • Conduct of adequate measures for the consumers incapable of paying (citizens, municipal services, industry and others). It has been established that the accustoming the consumers with the idea that the fee of the energy consumed is necessary is a significant problem. The expected consequence of achieving this is thrifty consumption of energy by the consumer and, correspondingly, at the next stage, wide use of recourse-saving technologies;
  • Supply of the net by power (table 1) without irregularities and obstacles.

Realistic actions for the implementation of the sources of alternative energy have not been noted, although there is a great potential of readiness for the use of appropriate technologies from the part of citizens.
