Transport

What is being done to make the city transport more environment-friendly

At the local level (Tbilisi Municipality) there are no initiatives or actions for the improvement of the administration of transport system in the city for the purpose of protection of public health and environment.

At the national level the significant measure is the introduction by the Parliament the amendments to "The Law On Investments", "Code of Administration Offenses" and "Criminal Code" on 22 July, 1999. In correspondence with these changes the import and selling of ethylized gasoline and lead tetraethylen is prohibited.

As a direct follow-up of the London Ministerial Conference (16-18 July, 1999) and by promotion of TACIS Environmental Awareness Program the "round table" meeting discussing the Declaration and the Protocols of the London conference was held in the office of Georgian Greens recently. Representatives of the Government, Tbilisi Municipality, non-governmental organizations took part in this meeting. There are several proposals from different local and international institutions regarding modification of city's transportation system, though real actions from the city municipality still need to be seen.
