Air quality

Data sources: HYDROMET, 1999;  Georgian Ministry of Environment, 1999; UNEP/GRID-Tbilisi, 1999.

Despite recent reduction on industrial productivity and shut down most of the enterprises air quality remains to be very poor in Tbilisi. Besides heavy pollution from stationary or mobile sources, meteorological and topographic conditions make the problem even risky. The central part of Tbilisi is located in the Mtkvari river canyon. High and very steep ranges surround the city from the South and Southwest and foothills and lesser hills - from the North and Northeast (see Orographic Scheme of Tbilisi ). Therefore, only the Northwest and Southeast directions are available for air movements. For environmental safety, the north-western winds are more important for the city, since Southeast winds bring extremely polluted air from Rustavi and Gardabani (where the most harmful enterprises of East Georgia: Rustavi Metallurgical Factory, the Nitrogen Plant 'Azoti', and Gardabani Thermal Power Plant are located).
