Crime and
accidents There have been committed 1075 heinous crime
(by 5.9% less than in 1997); 147 cases (by 3.2% more than in 1997)
of deliberate assassination or attempt of assassination have
accounted; 151 (by 1.3% more than in 1997) cases of property
rapine, 194 (by 10.2% more than in 1997) cases of property robbery;
192 cases of hooliganism have been accounted (20.9% less than in
1997). In this period 192 cases of the violation of traffic safety
and transport operation have been accounted (72 cases ended with the
death of victims), 230 cases of illegal carrying, storage,
manufacturing and selling of arms (by 19.0% less than in 997); 160
(by 44.2% less than in 1997) cases of motor transport
theft.
56 cases from motorway accidents are caused by drunkness of drivers, 10 - by disorder of road cover, 9 - unadjusted motor transport, 136 - poor conditions of road lighting, 664 - others. Fires. 2342 cases of fire were accounted in 1998. Damage imposed by fire has constituted 944.6 thousand laris (1924 fire cases and 972.4 thousand laris have been accounted in 1997). As a result of 811 fire cases accounted in the objects of national economy the damage imposed on the state constituted 461.1 thousand laris (688 fire cases were accounted in 1997, the damage imposed on the state constituted 154.6 thousand laris). 1277 fire cases have been registered in domestic sector, because of which the damage constituted 457.8 thousand laris (in 1997 there were 1068 cases and 695.8 thousand laris). As a result of fires accounted in the city, 25 persons have been killed, 29 persons have got burns. 1007 fire cases have been caused by disorder of electric equipment and domestic devices, because of which the damage imposed constituted 811.9 thousand lari (889 cases and 432.6 thousand lari of damage). Because of unsafe handling of fire the fire originated in 539 cases, resulting in 32.4 thousand lari of damage (323 cases and 56.6-thousand lari damage in 1997).
