Population and social conditions

  What is the general situation with the population?

As at 1 January 1999, Tbilisi - with 1,339,105 inhabitants, is the most populated city in Georgia. Currently, 25% of country's population live in Tbilisi, while in 1970 this number was equal only to 19%. The average population density is 3885 inhabitants per km2.

In 1998 population of Tbilisi due to the natural and other types of displacement (movement) has increased by 3439 inhabitants. Including Internally Displaced People (IDP)  the city's population constituted 1,339.1 thousands, 86.3  thouthands from which are IDPs.

There have been registered 12,239 life births and 9,929 death casesin in 1998. In 1998 there were 3,899 marriages in the city. 1,049 couples divorced.
