Toxic contamination

   What is causing the problems

There is no information about level of toxic pollution in urban environment by lead, cadmium, as well as no information about use of toxic chlororganic pollutants (e.g., PCB) and their release into environment (used oils, disposal of transformers, etc.). Emitted volumes of benzapirene are not measured. There is no information about possible pollution from particular stationary sources. For example, there is neither assessment of measures, nor expert assessments about the chlorinorganic and ployaromatic hydrocarbons emitted by Gardabani and Tbilisi power electric stations;

In last 10 years as a result of collapse of central heating system (see energy sector ), the domestic consumption of liquid fuel (oil, diesel) has increased. By expert assessment the amount of population exposed to organic pollutants in dwelling system (largely on account of additional effect of daytime, at the expense of women and children) has increased. Appropriate investigation and analysis has not been conducted. Awareness of the population in connection with these issues is low.

From the end of 1998 and the begining of 1999 restoration of the gas supply  system in some districts of the city reduced amount of population exposed to harmful influence.
