Water quality

Water abstraction and consumption

The collection of information about water abstraction, its use and discharge of consumed water back to natural reservoirs occurs as a result of submitting the "2TP-Water" statistical forms to the State Department of Statistics by industrial and water consumer facilities and their subsequent processing by the Ministry of Environment. In 1998 the amount of accountable water-consumers in Tbilisi was 49. In total in noted year 552.5 mln.m3 of water have been abstracted. This included 232.9 mln.m3 taken from surface water sites and 319.6 mln. m3 taken from underground sources. These indicators are slightly less than last years' data. On the one hand, there is the trend of water consumption noted, but if we compare to the information of 1996, the consumption, on the contrary, increases (484.2 mln.m3).

Data source: Georgian Ministry of Environment, 1999.

From the total amount of water abstracted in 1998 about 352.6 mln.m3 have been used for drinking purposes and needs of municipal economy, 27.09 mln.m3 for industrial purposes, 55.45 mln.m3 for irrigation. As much as 51.5 mln.m3 water has been lost while pumping.
