The numbers of unemployed in Finland have drastically increased during the slump of the 1990's. Prior to this period of depression, joblessness in Turku stood at approximately 4%, but rose at its peak to 23.5%, entering into decline as of 1994. Unemployment in Turku has been slightly higher than in the nation as a whole.
